October 2008 - IRSC FOUNDATION PIONEER RIVER PRESS
PUBLICATIONS WIN RECOGNITION
"Excursions in Geography" and "Two Lives, One Love"
Awarded 2008 President’s Book Awards from the Florida Publishers
Association Recognition of Excellence in Publishing.

Two Indian River State College Foundation Pioneer River Press publications, “Excursions in Geography” by Dr. James Lett and “Two Lives, One Love” by Jay Dickinson, were recently awarded 2008 President’s Book Awards from the Florida Publishers Association (FPA) in Recognition of Excellence in Publishing.

The Florida Publishers Association is the only statewide non-profit trade association representing independent publishers, authors, editors, illustrators and others involved in book publishing in Florida. Through its annual President’s Book Awards, the Florida Publishers Association recently honored the best books in 16 categories. Judged by a multi-judge panel of book industry experts, all entries were scrutinized by individuals with demonstrated success in book concept, design, production and marketing.

After the rigorous judging process, “Two Lives, One Love” by Jay Dickinson ($6.95, ISBN 0-9745098-4-1, 2006) was named the winner in the Best Adult Fiction category. “Two Lives, One Love” is an epistolary novel in the spirit of the novel “A Woman of Independent Means” by Elizabeth Forsythe Hailey and the play “Love Letters” by A.R. Gurney, but updated since the letters are sent by email. The letters are highly forthright communications between two extremely intelligent and sensitive, mature adults who are trying to resolve a personal issue that has festered throughout their marriage. The prose is interspersed with love poems that are an integral part of the plot. The authors, Drs. Jack and Jean Fielden, wrote the book under the pseudonym Jay Dickinson.

“Excursions in Geography” by Dr. James Lett ($39.95, ISBN 978-0-9745098-6-0, 2007) was named the winner in the Best Young Adult Nonfiction category at the FPA President’s Book Awards. The book also received a Silver Medal Award at the 2008 National Independent Publisher Book Awards in the Outstanding Book of the Year Most Original Concept category. Excursions in Geography is a full year of daily lessons in geographic literacy as heard on National Public Radio affiliate WQCS-FM, Classic 88.9, Fort Pierce, Florida. For each segment, the clues and introductions are presented on the first page and you can wait as long as you like before turning the page to find the answer. Each segment is illustrated with full color maps that allow you to form a precise visual image of the geographic location that is being described. Author Dr. James W. Lett is a member of the Honors Faculty and Professor of Anthropology and Geography at Indian River State College.

The Pioneer River Press is registered with the State of Florida and is operated under the auspices of the Indian River State College Foundation. The IRSC Foundation is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that serves the mission of Indian River State College. The authors of these books are pleased to contribute proceeds from the sales of their book directly to the IRSC Foundation to support students. Imagine…you can be curled up with a good book and at the same time have the inner satisfaction of knowing that you are helping deserving college students achieve their dreams.

Review of Throw Me the Bottom Line

Throw Me the Bottom Line - I'm Drowning in E-Mail! (Fielden, J.S. et al.; 2003) Floyd, R. E.
Professional Communication, IEEE Transactions on Volume 50, Issue 1, March 2007 Page(s):74 - 75

Summary:  This short paperback book is divided into 14 chapters and 2 exhibits. The book is designed to provide answers to two key questions - First, how do we reduce the number of emails we find in our mailbox each day, and ,second, how do we teach others to present information in the most effective manner? The solution, according to the authors, is simple: bottom line. In simple terms, it means bringing the subject to the front of the e-mail so that the reader finds the answer to the question "Why should I be interested? quickly. The authors develop a number of approaches that are suitable for most e-mail communication. The authors extend the concept to other business writing as well, but they admit there are circumstances that may require different approaches. The takeaway message is a good one for engineers, technical communicators, and managers alike. The book is an excellent addition to one's reading list and the local library's reference shelf.
