Test your geographic knowledge with Excursions in Geography
by Dr. James W. Lett. Excursions in Geography is a full year
of daily lessons in geographic literacy as heard on National Public
Radio affiliate WQCS-FM, Classic 88.9, Fort Pierce, Florida. It includes
the scripts for all of the segments of Excursions in Geography
broadcast during the 2005-2006 academic year. The broadcast version
of Excursions in Geography airs Monday through Friday at 7:28
a.m. during Morning Edition, and is often repeated at 6:00
p.m. during All Things Considered. The brief one-minute spots
are intended to pique listener interest in fundamental geographic literacy.
During the 2005-2006 academic year, Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays
were devoted to political geography, and featured brief quizzes asking
listeners to identify a particular country based on clues that build
from the obscure to the obvious. Tuesdays and Thursdays were devoted
to physical geography, and featured brief descriptions of various bodies
of water and land forms around the world.
This book addresses the limitations imposed by the radio medium. For
each daily segment, the clues and introductions are presented on the
first page, and you can wait as long as you like before turning to the
second page to find the answer—you don't have to beat the one-minute
time limit! In addition, every segment is illustrated with full color
maps that allow you to form a precise visual image of each geographic
location that is described. The various countries, capes, bays, islands,
peninsulas, and so forth are arranged randomly, just as they were broadcast
between September 2005 and August 2006—thus you'll never know
from one day to the next whether you're going to be in Europe, Asia,
Africa, or someplace else. However, there is an Index at the end of
the book that lists the page numbers for every topic of every Excursion
for each day of the year (every country, body of water, and land form
that is mentioned in the book is listed in alphabetical order in the
Index).
