Words to Teach By is a distillation of the truths I have learned over thirty years of teaching and learning. Some of these truths were discovered by making mistakes, some were discovered through interaction with students and parents, and some were the product of reflection on a teaching career that began in a small county-line K12 school in Mississippi. Since that initiation year, I have learned that students are very much the same as they were when I began my teaching career.
It does not matter what kind of homes they come from, what abilities they have, what societal pressures they have felt; when you close that classroom door, you and only you are responsible for what happens to those students. If you are new to teaching, reflection on these aphorisms can make your career less stressful and more enjoyable. If you are a veteran teacher, you probably already know this, but enjoy nevertheless.
